Visitors bring smiles to students:

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry
,
On May 17th, Congressman Jeff Fortenberry dropped by St. Augustine's to visit with some of the St. Augustine students. Congressman Fortenberry said he heard Fr. Dave speaking about St. Augustine's while at church and just had to come for a visit. We were happy to host the Congressman.

Joba Chamberlain
,
pitcher for the World Champion New York Yankees, and enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, brings gifts and encourages students to set high goals and work hard to achieve them. (see p.3 of Christmas "Trumpet Call")

Archbishop George Lucas
makes his first visit to St. Augustine's to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the school (see p.2 of Christmas "Trumpet Call")
Museum Opens...
St. Augustine's opened a museum to help honor the 100 year history of the school. Please stop by to see what we have put together. It is located in a building just to the west of the school. Pictured above is our 1900's classroom scene, complete with an image of St. Katharine Drexel at the head of the room.
*Awards Received...
*On December 19, 2009 we received the
Creighton University Presidential Medallion
The Rev. David Korth accepted the Presidential Medallion for the St. Augustine Indian Mission, in recognition of service to the Native American people of the Winnebago and Omaha tribes for 100 years.
*On May 15, 2009 we received a
Chief Standing Bear Organizational Award
from the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs. The plaque presented to Fr. Dave and Don Blackbird, Jr. reads:
"
The Chief Standing Bear Committee expresses it's appreciation and honor to St. Augustine Indian Mission School for recognizing your commitment to excellence in the education of Native students including the teaching of traditional Native American culture and language, on this fifteenth day of May in the year of Two Thousand and Nine
."
*St. Augustine Indian Mission received notice that it's 2009 Centennial Calendar was given the Gold Award at a national competition. It was selected as the number one non-profit calendar in the country. The calendar features the photography of Don Doll, SJ, who captures the beauty of our children in their Native regalia. The layout design artist is Pat Osborne from Mutual of Omaha. They have teamed up to win several awards on the regional level with our calendar in the past, but this is the first time we received the top honors in the nation!

* New exhibit opening...
The Betty Strong Encounter Center is hosting
“Who Are These Beautiful Children?”
, a photo exhibition celebrating the heritage, history & centennial of St. Augustine Indian Mission. The photo exhibit comprises contemporary images by Fr. Don Doll, SJ; archival Mission photographs; and text by Marcia Poole that reaches back to St. Augustine's beginning when it was founded in 1909 by St. Katharine Drexel. The exhibit was designed by Fr. Doll and Carol McCabe of Magis Productions.
The Betty Strong Encounter Center and adjoining Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center are located off exit 149 off I-29. For more information call
